PROJECT BRIEF

Derby Museums required a video to showcase their Derby Ram Trail. A flock of 30 colourful and unique 5ft rams will adorn the city of Derby. Based on the mythical Derby Ram from the 18th Century song, the video showcases a collaborative re-telling of the poem based on a series of lantern slides. The story tells how people from all over came to see the huge Derby Ram and will do so again on the 27th May to 22 August 2021 for the trail.

THE CHALLENGE

As the content of the video needed to be filmed during the lockdown period, the museums took the decision to ask the collaborators to film themselves using their mobile phones or camera recording device. This would therefore pose a slight challenge when editing the footage together, because some of the shots were filmed in portrait and some landscape orientation and with different sound levels and resolutions.

THE SOLUTION

When we had received all of the clips, we firstly assembled a rough cut together to see how the poem readings would flow. We then talked with the museum about introducing some animation into the piece, to give it that extra impact. We used the drawings from the lantern slides and re-created them in a more modern look with solid colours. Choosing the appropriate music came next and we decided to use something playful and fun to illustrate the nature of the mythical piece. The museum required various versions of the video to be played across social media and their website. These included versions with open and closed captions.

KIND WORDS

“Thanks so much once again for being part of the Derby Ram Poem collaboration. We were extremely pleased with the final piece and appreciate your support in making the project happen! As of this morning, the video has reached 7,500 via our facebook channels, 700 via insta and had around 6,000 impressions on twitter. It’s also steadily climbing the ranks in terms of most popular content on our https://www.derbymuseumsfromhome.com/ microsite, though as it continues to be shared we hope this reach will grow even further.

It was great to be able to reach out to new audiences and share news of the trail. As we get closer to trail launch, we will be re-sharing it on a grand scale once again to encourage people come to Derby to take part. So, thank you once again for being part of the project and for your support for our city and local heritage”
