National Cartoonist Day

Cartoonist Day, May 5th 2022

Today is National Cartoonists Day, where everyone celebrates those awesome cartoons created in times gone by.  From Calvin and Hobbes to Dilbert, we all have our favourites.  Cartoons are usually watched by children, whereas animations are watched by both adults and children.

We’ve spent the day at the office doing cartoon character impressions! How are you celebrating cartoon day?

At Mediabox, we love to be creative and we admire all of those cartoonists who made their mark across the world to inspire and entertain us.  Here we have picked a few examples of cartoons from the past that have inspired us!

Many of you will remember one of the earliest cartoons by Disney – “Steamboat Willie”, which is the most iconic as it is considered as the official debut of Mickey Mouse.

Walt Disney then got the clever idea of telling a long story as a “cartoon” The first one that he made was Snow White and the Seven Dwarves” 1937

What’s up, Doc?

Then there’s Bugs Bunny, the smart-aleck cartoon rabbit, known equally well for his carrots, his quips, and his trademark question—”Eh, what’s up, Doc?”  Bugs is possibly one of the most famous rabbits in the world! He first appeared in Porky’s Hare Hunt, a 1938 Warner Brothers cartoon.  From there, many more cartoons were produced and then animated onto TV by the 1950s.

In 1996 Bugs Bunny, was in cinemas with the feature-length film Space Jam, which combined animation with live action.

If you can dream it, you can do it!

There’s a famous quote that we love “If you can dream it, you can do it” Walt Disney.  Disney have inspired so many to go on and explore the possibilities of cartoon and animation.

The Simpsons, which started as a cartoon short in 1987 is still extremely popular and is planned to continue airing into 2023.

Today, with modern technology, cartoons can be easily created to both entertain and educate the audience.   The animations allow the audience to interact and engage with the content by bringing it alive with sound, visuals, and storytelling.

Every year new and more advanced techniques are captivating the audience.  Have a think about some of the latest animations that have been released this year and let’s celebrate together to appreciate the wonderful art of cartoon and animation.
